Winter Rocks Festival

The Corporation Sheffield 5.12.15

As a big fan of The Union, I was really looking forward to seeing Peter Shoulder on the second stage and he went down great! Playing a variety of material from his debut album “Feathers and Rain” including “It never Rains” Peter has created a new sound for himself. He even treated us to some new material from his new E.P, as much as I like him as a solo, I hope this isn’t the end for The Union.

Pete Shoulder

The Corporation was now getting busier as the main stage saw The Graveltones next. A duo rock and roll band from London. Starting their set with “Kiss and Fuck Off” and then “Never Gonna Let” The Graveltones have their own bluesy sound with some heavy guitar riffs, showing this off with their final song “Fancy Things”.

Back to the second stage for Falling Red, who never fail to put on a good show. A hell of a journey for these guys from Cumbria in the storm but they made it, and gave it their all! For the crowds just beginning to arrive for the main acts that night they certainly warmed everyone up with a personal favourite “We Escaped A Cult”.

Rozey - Falling Red

Main stage now for Scorpion Child, a five piece from Texas. These guys describe themselves as “heavy acid rock”, and not really knowing what this was, I do now! Their set included “Woman In Black” and “Acid Roulette”. Lead singer Aryn Jonathan Black had an amazing energy on stage, bouncing around and pulling some poses for the camera guys in the pit, by far the most entertaining band so far.

Aryn Black - Scorpian Child

Flip The Pyramid, a four piece from Rotherham and Slovakia. These guys are punk rock, so something a little different to mix up the evening. Unfortunately with the stage times running so close together this was time for me to fuel up and grab some food, so I did miss most of their set but from what I did see and hear they went down well.

SAWF- Flip The Pyramid

Back again to the main stage for Crobot. I first saw these guys at Hard Rock Hell earlier this year and they were a band that stood out for me so I was looking forward to seeing this four piece hard rock band from Pennsylvania again. These guys put on a good show, you could tell they really enjoyed themselves on stage especially with “Welcome to Fat City” and treating us to new song “Easy Money” Brandon bought out the harmonica. Finishing their set with “Fly on the Wall” with Brandon jumping on Chris’s shoulders and Jake the bassist did the whole show in just a pair of grey boxer shorts.

Second stage for Regulus next, another hometown band, a four piece with a groovy stoner rock unique sound. You could tell they really felt at home on stage at the Corporation and had so much fun on now a very packed out stage 2.

The Corporation was now very busy as we had just the top five bands left to play and it was now time for Nonpoint on the main stage. Nonpoint are a metal/heavy rock five piece from America. I was a little unsure of these guys as I’m not a huge fan of metal but I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, they were heavier than I would normally like but they were amazing on stage and really got the crowd going and geared up for their friends Fozzy. “Pins and Needles” was one of the crowd favourites and a great cover of Phil Collins song “In The Air Tonight” was certainly unique, but it worked really well, I’ll not be able to listen to the original without wanting the Nonpoint twist and sound to it.

Second to last on the second stage was Liberty Lies from the Black Country. A five piece alternative rock band who have toured with Halestorm, Shinedown and Heavens Basement. Belting out “Someone Else” and “Confessions of an Effigy” the crowd were fuelled up and ready for stage 2 headliners, Buffalo Summer.

I got the impression Fozzy was what most people had been waiting for and in true Jericho style, we had the intro “Do You Wanna Start A War” before he came on stage in a great flashing jacket. Fozzy put on an awesome show, lead singer – Chris Jericho is certainly an entertainer! They did a great cover of Abba’s “SOS” and the crowd really did go wild, jumping up and down and singing along. Lead guitarist Rich came out into the crowd, jumped on a box and was wheeled through the crowd back to the stage during “Sandpaper” and at the very end of their final song a Krokus cover of “Eat The Rich”, Jericho jumped into the crowd for a spot of crowd surfing.

Chris Jehrico - Fozzy

Headliners Buffalo Summer were on the second stage up next. A bluesy rock four piece from Swansea. I have seen Buffalo Summer a few times now and they always seem to impress me more every time. A great set to finish the second stage off, including a personal favourite of mine “Down To The River”, a song you can’t help but sing along to even if you’ve never heard it before.

The day’s headliner, The Temperance Movement were next on the main stage to finish what had been a great day of good rock music. The Temperance Movement are a five piece rock n roll band that has gone from strength to strength over the last 18 months. They have toured with The Rolling Stones and conquered America touring with Blackberry Smoke. I was so excited to see them back in the UK after what had seemed like a lifetime since I had seen them live. Playing a lot of their old classics “Only Friend”, “Midnight Black” and “Take It Back” but also some new stuff from their new album that’s out very soon including “Battle Lines”, “Three Bullets” and the bands favourite off their new album “Get Yourself Free”. At the end of their set the band attempted to leave the stage but of course, the crowd wanted more and they returned to do an encore which included the popular “Ain’t No Telling”.

Phil Campbell - The Temperance Movement

I had a great day at Winter Rocks, The Temperance Movement are one of my favourite bands and yes, I thoroughly enjoyed them but Fozzy stole the show for me. I would love to catch them again if they come back to the UK. Winter Rocks will be back in 2016 and I hope to see you there!

Winter Rocks Festival

The Corporation Sheffield 5.12.15.

There is no better way to kick off the festive period than a fun filled line up over two stages at the award winning night club, The Corporation in Sheffield.

After a few delays in opening up, it was apparent the stage times was not going to go as originally planned. Unfortunately for us Bad Touch had to pull out as they had traffic problems getting to the event, however this was beneficial for Winter Rocks as this meant the original openers Skarlett Riot could take their spot and the event could stick to its original timescales.

So now opening Winter Rocks on the second stage were Fahran, and what an opener that was! Fahran are a five piece hard rock band from Nottingham. After waiting outside in the gale force winds waiting for the venue to open, Fahran certainly warmed us up with “Cased In Steel” and “Take This City Alive”.

Josh Ballantyne - Fahran

Skarlett Riot up next and opening the main stage, a female fronted four piece from Scunthorpe, who over the few years they have been together, have managed to play Hard Rock Hell, Steelhouse and Download. Skarlett the lead singer has a great voice and a knack for getting the crowd involved. “Cascade” was a great example of this as she asked the crowd joined in and then slowing it down a little with “Ignite”.

Skarlett - Skarlett Riot

Time for a quick run back to the second stage and unfortunately the stage times were now overlapping by a few minutes, so in full swing were Stags. Stags have a unique sound and although they describe themselves as alternative rock, I thought they had more of a prog/blues sound.

Chris Finney - Stags

Back to main stage for Sumo Cyco. A female fronted punk metal band from Canada. They had a lot of energy on stage and the crowd really enjoyed their set. This was a band I had never heard of and wasn’t too sure what to expect but I thoroughly enjoyed their set which included “Like a Killer” and “Go Go Go”. A couple of new “Cyco’s” gained, that’s for sure!

Back to Verona were up next on the second stage, a five piece band playing good Rock n Roll in their hometown. As a relatively new band they are very likeable, their music doesn’t seem to stick to one genre and I think this makes them even more appealing. Be sure to check out their debut single “Every Other Time”, this went down a treat live!

Danny Wilkinson - Back To Verona

The Dirty Youth up next on the main stage, a female fronted five piece band from South Wales. The Dirty Youth have a rock-pop-punk sound and the crowd really enjoyed this unique sound with “Crying Out For You” and a Blondie cover “Atomic” The band had great enthusiasm and energy on stage.

The crowds were really starting to pick up now and it was back to the second stage for Silverjet, a three piece heavy rock band from Sheffield. With songs “Hell Yeah” and their next single “Don’t You Know Who We Think We Are” they had a great set.

Liam 'Pais' Hill - Silverjet

The well-dressed guys from Tax The Heat were next up on the main stage, a bluesy four piece from Bristol. Treating us to the new single “Some Sympathy”, which I am sure is going to do well if the crowd’s reaction was anything to go by. Finishing their set with their last single “Highway Home” you can see why these guys had the pleasure of supporting Thunder in their last tour.

Winter Rocks Festival

Saturday 5th December Corporation, Sheffield UK.

After the huge success of Winter Rocks 2014, the rock all day event returns on Saturday the 5th December with an even bigger line up of international and rising artists.

Keeping to its Sheffield roots, the event will take place at The Corporation an award winning music nightclub that has been established for over 20 years in the heart of the city.

WINTER ROCKS 2015

Headlining the main stage will be British rock & blues band THE TEMPERANCE MOVEMENT. After receiving critical acclaim that has seen them tour worldwide including supporting The Rolling Stones, incredible album sales of their 2013 debut and just poised to release their new album ‘White Bear’ on 15th January 2016, this is guaranteed to be a show to remember from one of the UK’s hottest bands.

“We are looking forward to tearing it up along with the fantastic line up at Winter Rocks Festival at The Corporation on December 5th. Let’s carve the date in Sheffield’s immense rock heritage…it’s gonna be an awesome way to round out a brilliant year.” – The Temperance Movement

American hard rockers FOZZY (featuring WWE’s wrestling superstar Chirs Jericho on vocals) will be main support. Now with 7 studio albums under their belts and an ever growing fan base they will be one of the ones to watch on the day: Here’s what Chris Jericho had to say about the event:

“Let me ask you this Fozzy fanatics…what’s the best way for us to end off yet another crackin Fozzy UK tour and kick off the holiday season? How about starting a war with hundreds of our closest friends (onstage and off) in Sheffield at Winter Rocks?? Sounds GREAT to me!! Father Christmas has already text me for comp tix and I told him to fuck off and get in line with everybody else…YOU guys get the presents this year at WINTER ROCKS!! See you there for a Merry ChristJerichomass!”

The excitement of Fozzy playing the festival has been heightened by the news that they will be bringing US metal heavyweights NONPOINT with them to play the event. Another established touring band that will be bringing their electric show to the Corporation stage: Elias Soriano from Nonpoint is excited about the day:

“If you’ve never seen us before be fucking ready. It’s gonna be one crazy, sweaty, hair swinging, beer drinking, ass kicking, sing along night like you won’t believe. Bring an extra pair of underwear… You’ll need em.”

Up for the best new band award by Classic Rock Magazine, CROBOT are a fast rising band with a big reputation. With so much hype and excitement about them, this is a real chance to remember where you saw them first.

Texan rockers Scorpion Child will also be joining the Winter Rocks main stage:

“Who’s going to be at Winter Rocks 2015? That’s right, we are! Hopefully all of you will come out and celebrate this amazing lineup with us. We couldn’t be more excited! See you soon Sheffield!” Aryn Jonathan Black – Scorpion Child

TAX THE HEAT are more proof of the current thriving UK rock scene. Add in The Graveltones to that mix, the two-piece Australian / London are definitely not to be missed.

The rise of female fronted rock bands are in abundance at Corporation this December too with American band SUMO CYCO joining the UK’s THE DIRTY YOUTH and SKARLETT RIOT at Corporation. All now masters of the touring circuit.

Also confirmed are BAD TOUCH and FALLING RED, and the rest of the main stage line up to be made up of established international touring artists.

The second stage sees a real mix of rising and Sheffield talent with Welsh rockers BUFFALO SUMMER taking on headlining duties. Recently signed LIBERTY LIES will be the main support having opened up Winter Rocks 2014.

Winter Rocks 2015 is one event not to be missed. What started as a small idea is now turning into one of the first names on people’s calendars for a quality assured Rock all day festival.

Promoter Stuart Turner is delighted with the level of bands that have been attracted to Winter Rocks:

“I always wanted to do an all day event where I could give rising Sheffield bands the chance to play with exciting touring artists. Last year proved that the Sheffield music scene has a good rock following and the bands get the opportunity to play to a big audience. The crowd get the chance to see many bands they wouldn’t get the opportunity to see otherwise. To get international artists of this caliber wanting to play Winter Rocks for the past two years means we are creating something truly special. I hope you can all join us again for Winter Rocks Festival 2015 for what will be an exciting day of rock and roll, and who knows you may just find your new favorite band! With no stage clashes this will be one event where you get to experience every artist with good ticket and drink prices to boot. Don’t miss it! “
