The Quireboys

The Venue Derby 14th September 2017.

The Venue Derby was definitely the place to be tonight, with a fantastic evening of ‘Rock n Roll‘ lined up courtesy of The Quireboys and the Last Great Dreamers.

And getting the night off to a great start were Last Great Dreamers with their glam tinged and nothing held back, power pop rock. Emerging in the early 90’s, those early years saw the band firmly stake their claim amongst a growing army of fans but with 1997 being a tough year for them in many ways, they decided to call it a day. Like many great bands, the music never fades away and Last Great Dreamers reappeared in 2014, stronger than ever.

Tonight’s set certainly warmed the crowd up and included songs such as ‘Far From Home‘, ‘Glitterball Apocalypse‘ and ‘You Didn’t Work‘, with the audience pleaser ‘White Light‘, getting the crowd clapping and singing along.

As the night went on and the beer began flowing the room got livelier, it was clear that the vast majority of the punters were here for The Quireboys.

Headliners, The Quireboys are a gypsy style rock band formed in London back in the 80’s and were originally known as The Queerboys, then The London Quireboys before they finally settled for The Quireboys. With plenty of celebrations to be had following the release earlier this year of their 11th albumWhite Trash Blues‘, they kicked off tonight’s set with the fifth track taken from it, “Going Down“. This was swiftly followed up with several more new tracks aswell and included ‘Leaving Trunk‘, ‘I Wish You Would‘ and the new single ‘Take Some Insurance‘. Spike also made a quick thank you to the fans, as the album is NO:1 in the iTunes blues chart.

There was also plenty of long standing favorites to be heard within their set aswell, with songs such as “Misled‘, ‘Mona Lisa Smiled‘ and ‘There She Goes‘ to name only a few. Highlight for many was ‘Hey You‘ which the crowd loved and didn’t need asking twice to get involved in. You can check-out all the bands latest video’s over at The Quireboys official Youtube channel.

Finishing their set with ‘7 O’Clock‘ the crowd certainly wanted more, and more they were given with an encore of ‘Rock n Roll‘ and ‘Sweet Mary Jane‘ – but it wouldn’t be a Quireboys gig if we didn’t have the mighty ‘Sex Party‘ to finish off the night.

The stage at The Venue was kinda small and I was worried that Spike wouldn’t be able to throw his Mic around but he found room and a fantastic night was had by all!

“Anyone who is a Quireboys fan is in for a treat with this current tour and I really recommend you buy tickets and go see them. And as a fan myself, I hope they come back to Derby soon”.
